[It's the 6th of July, summer has now properly arrived on the island of Avalon, and Hijikata is ready for his and Crow's middle birthday. He still finds it endearing how insistent Crow was on making up for Hijikata having ignored his own birthday back in May, and honestly, any reason to drink is a good one on a nice evening like this. He's looking forward to catching up with Crow, too - has it really been a month already since they dealt with those trows together?! When he sees him arrive he raises his arm to get his attention.]
We're lucky I got here in time to get us an outdoors seat. It's much too nice to sit inside!
[ Crow's glad they decided to meet up at night since the temperature is much more comfortable than during the day. Though it's still warm enough to enjoy a few cool drinks without feeling a chill. He spots Hijikata waving at him as he approaches, and the musician waves back enthusiastically before breaking into a brisk run.]
My bad, I had to make a stop on the way!
[Crow doesn't come empty-handed. Of course, he knows the samurai would tell him not to get him anything, but the redhead was still determined to make this a little special for the officer. He's proud to reveal this very unusual find, a chocolate mayonnaise cupcake with mayonnaise filling. He didn't think people were crazy enough to do this, but the world is weird like that. Still, the only thing that quickly came to mind was Hijikata's weird thing for mayo, and it horrified him to know people actually put the condiment into desserts! Still, if it makes the officer a little happy, then his mission is accomplished!]

[Crow finally takes a seat, stealing the menu to declare that, "Drinks are on me!" as he promised.]
What do you want to drink? Beer or sake? Or maybe you want the hard stuff?
[That's really kind of Crow... only that Hijikata doesn't realise that it's a mayonnaise cupcake right away. Still, it says a lot that he smiles for Crow despite not really liking sweet sugary treats all that much!]

I'll start with sake, yeah. They've got a "summer solstice sake", whatever that is, I'll give that a try.

[Crow was just going to go for a jug of beer, but sake sounds like it's a level up from beer. Somehow, he wants to prove to Hijikata that he can hold his liquor, even though it's not a competition. So when the server comes by, Crow requests two chilled Summer Solistic Sake. He also throws in the candle as well.
He looks up to see the officer present him with Onyx's gift. Oh yeah for the time that his familiar helped them out with crystals. Seeing the ruby, Crow automatically knows the yatagarasu will like it.]
This is perfect! He'll love it! Actually, he can thank you himself!
[ The hedgehog summons his familiar. The tri-pedal crow perches himself on the table as Crow shows him the necklace. He places it on the bird, and Onyx visibly puffs out his chest with pride.]
It seems he likes it.
[Onyx hops on the samurai's shoulder and he starts picking at the strands of Hijikata's hair as if trying to preen them. Crow chuckles a little at the show of affection.]
Yep! He likes it a lot! And I guess I'll be patient with my gift, but you didn't have to!
[Aw, Onyx really seems happy! Hijikata asked the jeweler to tie the band to the yatagarasu's approximate size so it won't get in his way while flying or perching on branches. He allows the grooming, even if it won't get his hair any neater. His own familiar, despite having a crow form too, would never be this affectionate with him... in fact Hijikata would be kind of spooked if he suddenly were. He laughs a little and runs a hand over the youkai's back.]
It suits you, Onyx.
[Already the server returns with their sake and a thin little candle, which he sticks into Hijikata's cupcake and lights.]
Do I make a wish now? Or should we leave it on for a while for ambience?
[The server smiles and ensures him that they'll provide them with lights for their table once it gets properly dark. After a few words of banter he leaves, and Hijikata raises his glass to Crow.]
[Onyx likes the petting enough to not fidget so much on Hijikata's shoulder as the server comes out with their sake and a candle. Now, this can be an official birthday cupcake!]
Huh? Ambience? Who cares about that, make a wish before the candle starts to melts! And you have to wish for something really good! Nothing lame like a new pair of socks!

[Oh, this feels so nostalgic. Their surroundings are very much Avalonian, but simply being able to "kanpai!" with someone and taste the sake on his lips (it comes with a slightly sweet fruity note) gives Hijikata a sense of home. He follows Crow's eager encouragement and, on his count, blows out the candle while wishing to find his loved ones on Earth and Prismatica alive and well when this is all over.]
Let's share the cupcake.
[The server thoughtfully provided a knife and fork along with the drinks and candle, so Hijikata cuts the tiny birthday cake in half. When he takes the first bite of his share his face immediately lights up.]
Oh! It's delicious! You've got to tell me where you bought it! I've never had a cupcake this good!
[ Though before Crow could even protest, the server already has a knife and fork ready. Hijikata already cuts into the cupcake, so he couldn't refuse. Damn it!
Though seeing Hijikata enjoy the cupcake makes the rocker pretty pleased with himself! It's not a regular cupcake, so it's not unusual that the older man hasn't had anything like it before.]

[Crow digs into his half as he allows the samurai to figure it out. Oh, it's actually not bad at all!]
[He's visibly delighted, looking all mellow and glowy... being gifted mayonnaise treats makes him happier than almost anything else, so Crow's idea was a total bullseye.]
[Obviously anyone can recognize their favorite food even in the guise of a fluffy confection. Crow's disappointment doesn't last long because Hijikata's praise goes straight to the hedgehog's head. Of course, he has good taste!

It can range from chokers, necklaces, rings, or elaborate clothing. Though at his simplest form, he's happiest with good food and company.

Avalon's a good world, on the whole. Sure, there are jackasses everywhere, but we've got everything we need, there's no war going on, no toxic environment or world-destroying monsters... I've heard some real horror stories.

Rom, his drummer, usually insisted on the same thing whenever the band would go out to eat. Though since it's a somewhat special occasion, Crow will insist on splitting the bill!
Once they finish paying, Crow stands up and stretches his arms over his head. He feels pretty good after a few drinks and food, but also very tired. He'll probably hit his pillow as soon as he gets back!]

They probably should've sobered up before leaving. Crow makes a mental note to drink some water, before passing out. He grins widely, happy to hear that Hijikata will try to take some time off.]

He sees the samurai waving down the server. Normally in this situation, he would accept the Japanese custom and allow the eldest one of the group to pay. Rom, his drummer, usually insisted on the same thing whenever the band would go out to eat. Though since it's a somewhat special occasion, Crow will insist on splitting the bill!
Once they finish paying, Crow stands up and stretches his arms over his head. He feels pretty good after a few drinks and food, but also very tired. He'll probably hit his pillow as soon as he gets back!]

[He hooks one of his arms around Crow's, though, to steady him. They can probably both use the counterweight; the lantern-lit evening street does look a little double-layered...]

After sitting down so long and having to make the trek back to the inn, he can feel his balance is a bit off. So he doesn't protest as Hijikata hooks his arm around his, he doesn't need to embarrass himself anymore tonight.
They probably should've sobered up before leaving. Crow makes a mental note to drink some water, before passing out. He grins widely, happy to hear that Hijikata will try to take some time off.]
